A used car priced at $20,000.00 in Michigan will cost you at least $1,252.00 in sales tax, title, and registration fees, on top of the purchase price.

Michigan's real registration tax is set by your vehicle's ORIGINAL manufacturer's list price (MSRP) when new, not the price you paid today, and this calculator has no MSRP input. The total above assumes the $36 first-registration minimum; if your vehicle's original MSRP was above $6,000 (true of nearly every vehicle), you will owe more, and there is no statutory maximum, so no reliable ceiling can be shown. That range isn't guesswork — here is exactly what moves it:

  • Registration tax above the $36 minimum (depends on original MSRP and vehicle age): MCL Sec. 257.801(1)(p)(i) (https://www.legislature.mi.gov/Laws/MCL?objectName=mcl-257-801) schedules the first-registration tax by the vehicle's original MSRP ('list price') in $1,000 bands above $6,000, e.g. $40 up to $7,000, $58 up to $10,000, $178 up to $30,000, then $178 plus $6.00 per additional $1,000 (or fraction) above $30,000 -- WITH NO STATUTORY MAXIMUM: a vehicle with a higher original MSRP simply keeps costing more. This file used to model a max_cents ceiling here (about $459.00, corresponding to an assumed original MSRP near $82,800), but that ceiling was never a real cap -- just this file's own guess at a 'generously high' MSRP, chosen with no statutory basis. It is removed rather than repeated: this calculator has no MSRP input and no vehicle-age/registration-count input (needed for the 10%-per-year reduction), so it cannot state a real ceiling above the $36 floor already counted in registration.amount_cents -- only that most buyers will owe more than that floor, genuinely without limit. Fee breakdown

ItemAmountNote
Sales tax $1,200.00
Certificate of title fee $15.00 Official Michigan Dept. of State FAQ, 'What does it cost to transfer a title?': '$15 title transfer fee.' (The same FAQ also lists an additional $15 late fee if the title isn't transferred within 15 days of the sale date -- a penalty, not a standard purchase cost, so not modeled here.)
Lien notation fee $1.00 The same official FAQ raises the title fee to $16 when a lien is recorded on the title -- e.g. a financed purchase -- modeled here as a $1 addition on top of the base $15 title fee. Not charged on a cash purchase with no lien to note. This file previously modeled the title fee as a flat $15 regardless of financing; corrected during this project's Task 6 final review (see the Minors section of that review).
Registration $36.00
